Hey Now!

We want to let you know about the 2nd Annual Jerry Day event in the Atlanta, Georgia metro area on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug 2, 2009 to celebrate the music, spirit and birthday of Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia. This gathering will include live performances by five (5) groups of Atlanta jam band veterans. The party will be held at Shorty’s Pizza Tucker location and admission is FREE.

1:00 PM gr8FLdüde & frenz (ensemble playing only Jerry songs)
1:45 PM Cadillac Tattoo (garage band groove playing a few Jerry songs)
2:30 PM Jango Monkey (catchy originals with multiple influences playing a Jerry song or two)
3:45 PM Sundown Underground (rock/funk cover band playing mostly Jerry songs)
4:45 PM DROP (rockin’ the house with mainly Jerry songs)

BACKGROUND
For a few years beginning in 1997, Jeff Dunham and Z93 – 92.9 FM radio sponsored an outdoor event on the first Sunday of August billed as “The Music Hasn’t Stopped” and showcased many local and national acts performing music composed and influenced by Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Dunham, a native of Maine, retired from the music scene in ATL and moved to Florida after the radio station was sold to ClearChannel (management were not receptive to continuing the tradition of airing the weekly Grateful Dead Hour syndication or supporting other successful Dunham ventures such as the annual 2-day JerryJam held every May, monthly GDH listening parties and numerous other concert promotions).

Dunham’s departure has left a void in the ATL music scene for the past several years that Lewis Newmark and Jim Roe, event organizers for Jerry Day in ATL, hope to fill if only one day each year. While at a social event in Autumn 2007, the two metro Atlanta residents were lamenting about lack of cohesion in the area’s “Deadhead Scene” and decided to stage the event, but were unable to obtain any local/regional support or sponsorship that would allow the event to be held in a municipal venue. Bryan Wilson, owner of Shorty’s Pizza, was approached and became highly receptive to the concept, agreeing to host the event at his Tucker, Georgia location (well known for showcasing some of the area’s best musical talent since opening this location in 2008).

We are excited to announce “SHORTY’S INAUGURAL PRO-AM PIZZA DESIGN COMPETITION“. We want you to tell us about your favorite pizza, or the best pizza you have ever had. The winner will get a cash prize of $1,000 and the winning pie will also be added to the menu.

That got your attention, didn’t it? Full details about this competition later in the newsletter, but the following must be said, right up front … the bootlegging of awesome recipes from other pizza joints is acceptable, will be tolerated, and is strongly encouraged.

Everyone (in the world) is invited to submit a favorite pizza recipe for a chance to win a $1,000 cash prize. The winning pizza will also be permanently added to the menu at Shorty’s. This event is open to professional chefs and amateur cooks alike – anyone and everyone can enter as many times as they want to, but there is a $1 fee per entry.

The competition will end at midnight on June 7th, 2008. The finals/judging will take place on Sunday, June 15th at 2pm at Shorty’s in Tucker. Ten pizzas will be selected as FINALISTS and these will be announced via Shorty’s monthly eblast newsletter on June 10th, 2008. Tickets for the finals will be available for $20 per person, and the entry fee will include samples of each of the ten finalist pizzas, along with selected beers and wines.

Entry forms may be posted eventually on our myspace page, but they can be picked up right now at either restaurant. All entries must be submitted with the entry fee ($1 per entry) which must be paid in cash, in person at a shorty’s location. No email, myspace, or telephone entries please.

In keeping with Shorty’s rock n’ roll theme, designers must pick an appropriate name for their creation. The Judges reserve the right to rename the winning pizza if it is deemed to have been given a name that lacks “street credibility”. Bootlegging awesome recipes from other pizza joints is strongly encouraged. The Judges decision is final. All ingredients are fair game, but common sense should dictate that recipes which include ingredients like Beluga Caviar, Lobster, Sea Urchin, and Fresh Truffles will be a tough sell at Shorty’s, and will probably not make it to the finals. Good luck.
